Wells Fargo Championship- A Not So Sleepy Hollow

The travelling circus that is the PGA Tour hits Charlotte, NC this week.  It’s a fairly big one this weekend, and many are making their first outings since the Masters. This week, Fairway Chatter is looking to see who’ll be bringing home the bacon at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

Big names being put forward as potential winners this week include Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy. Both of these guys are previous winners of this event, with wins in 2012 and 2010, respectively. Rory is slowly but surely returning to form and I think there is a great chance he’ll get it together this week. Fowler has recently started working with Butch Harmon. He’s hitting it really well and his swing looks a lot better. He’s in brilliant form and will fancy his chances this week. After a good showing by both at Augusta, I would say they would both be a great each way bet.

The 16th, 17th, and 18th holes at Quail Hollow are known as the ‘Green Mile’. Too many courses these days are giving stretches nicknames, but hey it is what it is. Who else might be coming down this stretch with a chance of picking up over $1M though? I think Lee Westwood is another good shout this week. Westy is just off the back of a win in Malaysia, and now that Billy Foster (his long-term caddy) is back from injury, he is finding form again. I defy you to find a better tee-to-green golfer than Westwood, and so as long as his putter is working, he’s always a threat.

Westwood and Fowler are two of a number of players who have changed coach for the 2014 season and so far so good in the case of these two. Westwood had joined the stellar stable of Canadian Sean Foley, but it just wasn’t working for him. Foley is unquestionably an incredibly skilled golf coach. He takes inspiration from many sports, not just golf, and has probably the best stable in golf at the moment. However when it doesn’t work for you it doesn’t work for you.

Anyway, I digress. Looking at the entry list for this week it’s going to be a good tournament. I’ve made a terrible start to the season in terms of my picks so please Rory, Rickie or Lee (I know you’re all devoted readers) please make me look good. Enjoy.
